The Forest Products Department at the University of Idaho recently developed a unique, hands-on, two-credit course entitled “Wood – A Remarkable Fiber” to familiarize primary and secondary teachers with the harvesting, properties, uses, and manufacture of wood and wood products. Science and technology as well as the human perspective (society) were carefully integrated to provide a balanced view of the forest products industry and societal needs. Course materials provided to the teachers included lecture notes, ideas for small group activities, experiments, and a “wood bag.” The course has been taught six times over the last 3 years and has been well received by teachers in Idaho, Montana, and Washington. Funding has been provided by the Idaho Forest Products Commission, the University of Idaho, and the forest products industry.
