Student Research Exhibition

The Forest Products Society is pleased to announce a Student Research Exhibition to be held at the 62nd International Convention in St. Louis. Rules for this Exhibition are outlined below:

  1. All Student Members of the Forest Products Society are eligible to participate. Students must be enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a University program at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral level.
  2. Student posters will be presented by topical organization in the regular Technical Forums (poster sessions) scheduled for Monday and Tuesday afternoon of the International Convention. Student posters entered in the competition will be identified by a special tag.
  3. Poster submission, including the accompanying abstract, will be conducted by the same procedure as for all other Technical Forum posters. Student posters will be automatically entered into the competition, by virtue of the author’s status as a Student Member of the Society. If, for any reason, a Student Member does not wish to participate in the competition, the Student is requested to contact the International Office at 608-231-1361, ext. 208 or conferences@forestprod.org to have their poster removed from the competition. Any posters so excluded from competition will retain their place as a regular Technical Forum contribution.
  4. Posters may have multiple authorship, but the student must be the primary (first) author of the poster.
  5. Posters will be evaluated by a panel of five judges, with awards based on the judging panel’s evaluation of the entire pool of student posters in the Monday and Tuesday Technical Forums combined. Awards will be made at the Paul Bunyan Party. Panelists with a conflict of interest (e.g., serving as a member of a student’s advisory committee) will not evaluate the poster(s) in question.
  6. All participants in the Student Research Exhibition will receive a certificate of participation. In addition, there will be awards consisting of a monetary prize and a certificate for the most highly scored posters as evaluated by the panel of judges.

          Prizes to be awarded:
          First Place: $500
          Second Place: $250
Honorable Mention: $125 – one or two awards at this level, at the discretion
          of the Judge’s Panel.
  7. Posters will be evaluated solely on the basis of the submitted abstract and the content of the poster itself. There will be no criteria associated with verbal interaction of the presenter and the judges, as the judging will occur throughout the entire time period during which the posters are on display, not just during the time in which authors are requested to be present at their poster. Posters will be scored on a 100 point basis, with criteria as outlined below:

          1. Abstract
                a) Research Hypothesis (10 points)
                b) Scientific Writing (15 points)
                c) Organization (10 points)
          2. Poster
                a) Scientific Merit (20)
                b) Experimental Methodology and Design (15 points)
                c) Conclusions (15 points)
