Student Poster Competition Guidelines and Procedures


Purpose:
1) Encourage student attendance at the meeting
2) Recognize excellence in student research
3) Improve the visibility of student research efforts
4) Highlight connection between research and industrial applications

Eligibility:
All undergraduate and graduate students attending the conference are encouraged to apply. There should be no coauthors on the poster; however, faculty advisors and funding agencies should be identified in the poster display. Poster must be in any area/aspect of wood adhesives.

Awards:
The top poster will be awarded $300, second place $200, and third place $100.

Application:
Students must submit a completed student poster competition application form (below) to Robert Moon, robertmoon@fs.fed.us and Julie Lang, conferences@forestprod.org by September 1, 2009.

Judging:
During the poster session a committee of judges will evaluate the poster presentations based on a 100-point scale. Judges with conflict of interest will remove themselves from judging corresponding student posters. Students should prepare for a 2 minute maximum verbal presentation that addresses key aspects of their project. Posters should be written in English.

Judging Criteria and Points:
i. Quality of abstract (10 points)
ii. Soundness of research hypothesis (10 points)
iii. Scientific merit (innovation, relevance, potential impact) (20 points)
iv. Experimental design, execution, and conclusions (20 points)
v. Organization, clarity, and visual quality of the poster (20 points)
vi. Verbal presentation (2 minutes maximum) (10 points)
vii. Response to questions of judges (~2 minutes) (10 points)
